Anticipating the slew of Microsoft-powered products rattled the Palm sales team. They were the ones who would have to convince the retailers to keep stocking Pilots in the face of pitches from Windows CE device makers HP, Philips, and Casio.

Nor did these reps, who periodically flew into Palm for meetings from all over the United States, have the benefit of the "don't panic" message the Palm executives spread in meetings and hallway conversations. But they were painfully aware that Microsoft had won almost every market it had ever pursued. Palm's only hope was to be an exception to this rule.
